The history of Australian began in 1945 when the clothing company L’Alpina was founded by Lina Anna Maria Gabrielli. This Italian lady started a wintercollection named Gabrielle consisting out of pullovers. Clothing for tennis offered a lot of potential so Ganbrielli made a move into this segment dominated by Fred Perry and Lacoste. The tennis clothing was named Australian, a referral to the domination of players from Down Under in the tennis circuit.

 

Nowadays the Italian company with the name from Down Under is not only emphasizing on tennis, but it also offers a great collection of footwear.

The first Australian collection was unveiled in 1950.  The designers were inspired by Australian tennis players like Rod Laver who had won Wimbledon in 1968 and Ken Rosewall, winner of Roland Garros, the US Open and the Australian Open. For these people the Australian clothing were designed to be worn on and off court.

 

Australian began expanding the collection and nowadays the Italian company with the name from Down Under is not only emphasizing on tennis, but it also offers a great collection of footwear.
